Makins specialise in the growing, packing and distribution of fresh produce for selected major retailers
and Michelin star restaurants throughout the United Kingdom.
The strawberry season at Makins runs from May to November. The crop is grown under multi-bay and telescopic poly tunnels, which ensures an excellent growing environment and protects the fruit from inclement weather. Couple this with the 360km of ‘table top tray substrate system’ which comprises of steel tables held above ground by steel supports on which rows of strawberry plants are embedded. The irrigation system allows individual plants to be fed and watered by a single supply.
This method ensures premium quality and the continuity of supply throughout the British
summer; it also provides good picking conditions for the workers and enables perfect fruit to be provided with a better yield achieved.
Different varieties are trialled every season with Elsanta being the main crop.
The ability to use semi-permanent tunnels will ensure a more systemic approach to our tunnel management. Utilising this system will also allow farmers to double crop. This growing system is less dependent on the weather and soil conditions, ensuring a more effective and sustainable method of growing strawberries.
The blackberries grown at Makins were planted at the beginning of 2007 with the first crop picked in 2008. The blackberry season runs from July to November.
We have created a optimum growing environment for the blackberries using multibay polytunnels to protect the berries from weather damage.
production of large and sweet blackberries, unlike those free to pick roadside brambles.
Makins is the UK’s largest producer and supplier of blackberries under polytunnel, with the 15 acres is split between two very popular thornless varieties called Chester and Lochness.
